Meaning "cruel and oppressive", which describes this giant, monstrous Pokemon. I'm honestly surprised I didn't find this one. Also part of my Hall of Fame team in my recent Platinum Nuzlocke. It has a dual meaning, either 'skull cracking' or 'skull kraken', the latter being a vicious sea monster of lore to which Gyarados can be compared.Īkkadian Goddess of the Sea and personification of the Primordial Chaos, who took the form of a Sea Serpent. One of the possible names for Gyarados in the beta version of Pokemon Red, it was discarded due to the character limit (originally spelt as 'Skullkraken'). They're both water-associated dragons, with similar colors and strong ties to Japanese mythology. I named my Gyarados after Haku from Spirited Away.
